China military official says war with US under Donald Trump 'becoming practical reality'
War with the US under Donald Trump is “not just a slogan” and becoming a “practical reality”, a senior Chinese military official has said.
In a commentary on the official website of People’s Liberation Army, the official at the national defence mobilisation department in the Central Military Commission wrote: “A war ‘within the president’s term’ or ‘war breaking out tonight’ are not just slogans, they are becoming a practical reality.”
The official also called for military deployments in the disputed South and East China Seas.
President Donald Trump sparked controversy before his inauguration when he contested “One China Policy”, which considers Taiwan as part of the mainland. No US government has raised such questions in the last four decades.
"As it's highly unlikely that China will compromise its sovereignty claims in the face of US pressure, we can be sure that the dispute will increasingly become a risky point of contention between Beijing and Washington," Ian Storey, a senior fellow at ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore, told the South China Morning Post
